Mary Cosby offered a statement of apology on her Instagram page on Sunday for a statement she made about Mexicans on last week’s episode of The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City
Ahead of Sunday night’s new episode of season two, Mary took to her social media page, where she admitted to using “poor judgment” when she seemingly made a racist comment against the Mexican community and opened up about her own experiences with racism.
“I love you all!” Mary wrote in the caption of her December 12 post, along with a number of hashtags, including #apologyaccepted, #makeitright, #latinos, #seektruth, and #seeklove.
Then, in a more lengthy statement, Mary insisted she meant no ill will.
“I would like to take this opportunity to address a comment I made on the last episode of RHOSLC. I used poor judgment in my choice of words. Please accept my apologies. I was not trying to single out the Mexican culture. I am African American and I know racism first hand. I’ve lived it daily my entire life. It is important to me that you hear this apology directly from me. My comment was reckless… Unintentional. I am truly sorry!” she shared.
On last week’s episode of RHOSLC, after being compared to Jen Shah, who is accused of targeting the elderly in a years-long telemarketing scheme, Mary made a concerning comment about Mexicans to Lisa Barlow.
“It’s not fair to put me with someone so… Like, when I think about Jen I see a heartless… I see a thug,” Mary said. “Like, you know, those Mexican people that make all those drugs.”
Following the airing of the episode, Lisa reacted to her castmate’s statement on Twitter after being confronted about the topic by a viewer.
“[Lisa Barlow] and for you not to correct [Mary Cosby] when she said the comment about Mexican [people] when you profit off a Tequila company based in Mexico that you own is gross! You should be ashamed,” the fan wrote to Lisa on December 5.
“She should be ashamed,” Lisa agreed. “I didn’t say it and am not aligned with this. I address it. Keep watching.”
The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City season two airs Sundays at 9/8c on Bravo.
